If workers are held responsible for the outcomes of their AI-assisted tasks, but not necessarily for the initial "bad ideas" generated by the AI, it fosters an environment where innovation isn't penalized. Furthermore, Mollick strongly advocates for executives to personally engage with AI systems. Amidst the enthusiasm surrounding AI's potential, organizational leaders must discern which concerns warrant significant attention and which might be overstated. Mollick suggests that some prevalent anxieties are disproportionate to the actual risks. For instance, widespread worries about data privacy, particularly concerning general-purpose AI models, can be misplaced given the extensive use of cloud-based email and file storage services by many enterprises. The key, he advises, is for employees to avoid free chatbots that explicitly use user data for model training.
Similarly, the perceived necessity for proprietary AI models is often overvalued. Mollick points out that larger, general-purpose models, trained on more extensive datasets, typically outperform smaller, custom-built solutions. He cited an example where GPT-4, without specialized customization, surpassed Bloomberg’s multi-million-dollar custom stock-trading language model, highlighting the power of scale in AI training.
However, two areas of concern demand substantial discussion and proactive management:
