Recent reports from Gaza's civil defense agency indicate that at least 13 individuals, including five children, have been killed in Israeli strikes on the Palestinian territory. These incidents reportedly occurred on Thursday despite a US-sponsored ceasefire agreement that has largely paused widespread hostilities since October.
Mahmud Bassal, a spokesperson for the civil defense agency, stated that four people, three of whom were children, perished when a drone reportedly struck a tent sheltering displaced persons in southern Gaza. Concurrently, an 11-year-old girl was reportedly killed near the Jabalia refugee camp in the northern Gaza Strip. Further reports from the agency detailed one fatality in a strike on a school and the death of a man from a drone near Khan Younis in the south. Two additional Palestinians, including another child, were also reported killed in separate attacks.
Later on Thursday evening, four more lives were tragically lost in an Israeli airstrike that targeted a house in an eastern district of Gaza City. Bassal confirmed these fatalities and mentioned that rescue efforts were underway to locate several individuals reported missing following the strike.
Allegations of Ceasefire Violations Intensify
Bassal explicitly stated that the rising death toll, reaching 13 as a result of Israeli strikes throughout Thursday, constituted a clear breach of the existing ceasefire agreement. The Israeli military, when queried about these specific reports by news outlets, indicated it was reviewing the information.
Earlier in the day, the Israeli military had issued a statement confirming that a projectile was launched from the vicinity of Gaza City towards Israel but landed within the Gaza Strip. Following this event, the military stated it precisely targeted the launch point. The US-brokered truce, which came into effect on October 10, aimed to halt the conflict between Israeli forces and Hamas. However, both parties have frequently accused each other of violating its terms, leading to ongoing localized confrontations.
Hazem Qassem, a spokesperson for Hamas, condemned the Thursday strikes, asserting that they underscore the Israeli occupation's disregard for its commitments under the ceasefire. This mutual recrimination highlights the deep-seated mistrust and the fragile nature of the current cessation of hostilities.
Escalating Toll Since Ceasefire Implementation
The ceasefire, while mitigating large-scale warfare, has not completely stopped the violence. According to Gaza's health ministry, a grim total of at least 425 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces since the truce took effect in October. This cumulative figure reflects a persistent pattern of deadly incidents, with November 22 marking one of the deadliest days, as Israeli strikes reportedly resulted in 21 fatalities.
Conversely, the Israeli military has also reported casualties on its side during the same period, stating that three of its soldiers have been killed by militants. These ongoing losses on both sides underscore the persistent instability and the challenges of maintaining a lasting peace in the volatile region, even under a ceasefire agreement. The humanitarian situation, particularly for displaced populations, remains a critical concern amidst these continued hostilities.
